TalkTalk SIM card packaging design – the “Z-Lift”

Aim: In 2010, leading communications company TalkTalk launched their first mobile service that would be available exclusively to pre-existing customers. TalkTalk wanted a packaging solution for their SIM cards that was compact, engaging and that would compliment their low-cost but high-performance offering.

Strategy & Tactic: In conjunction with its innovative functionality, a key objective was keeping material use to an absolute minimum to facilitate production and maintain cost-effectiveness. Sold only online, the pack also had to be structurally robust for sending through the post.

Target Audience: Existing TalkTalk customers

Design: Conveying TalkTalk’s value of high-performance and customer care, Burgopak’s new Z-Lift packaging design creates a pleasurable and memorable branding experience through physical interaction and novelty, without sacrificing design value for material efficiency. Using only cartonboard, the playful SIM card packaging design features an engaging opening mechanism (a design trait fundamental to Burgopak) that lifts, rotates and displays the brand’s exclusive customers-only product. Compact in size, the playful design further complements and enhances the vibrant TalkTalk branding. Pulling the opening tab triggers the SIM card to lift up on a platform where it is securely held in place. Burgopak’s Z-Lift pack is further able to hold a booklet of up to 40pp, which also serves as a functional component within the pack.

End Result: TalkTalk’s SIM card packs are available after purchase of an alternate TalkTalk service. Known for the innovative patented slider packs, Burgopak has been expanding its range of bespoke packaging and creative services, offering unique and clever packaging concepts that are not only creative but designed realistically for production, offering a full service from concept, to design, to production.
